Pest Free Token: The Innovative Answer for a Predator Free New Zealand
New Zealand is facing a growing environmental crisis. With 25 million native birds dying every year due to introduced pests, the country is working tirelessly to meet its ambitious goal of becoming predator free by 2050. But despite the efforts, one of the biggest barriers to success is the lack of consistent funding for pest eradication. That’s where Pest Free Token comes in – a unique, innovative project designed to help secure the future of New Zealand’s native wildlife combining traditional trapping with the power of cryptocurrency.
Who We Are
Launched in April 2022, the Pest Free Token project was founded by a couple of passionate New Zealanders: Alex McGregor and Patrick Abel, based in Wellington, and Harrison Bissell, who joined the team from Auckland. All three share a strong interest in both cryptocurrency and pest trapping, combining their expertise to create a solution that tackles a national problem in an innovative way. The project has grown rapidly, powered by Kiwi ingenuity and an unwavering commitment to its cause.
At the heart of the Pest Free Token project is a simple yet powerful mission: to help New Zealand reach its 2050 predator free target. By using cryptocurrency as a vehicle for funding pest eradication efforts, the project aims to provide a continuous, independent source of income for this vital cause. Creating a new income source also means the project does not detract from already existing sources.
100% of the project’s profit goes directly to pest eradication efforts. The team works pro bono, taking no wages to ensure that every dollar raised is used to make a lasting impact on New Zealand’s environment.

Our Mission: A Predator Free New Zealand
New Zealand has long struggled with the devastating effects of introduced pests, and this challenge has put immense pressure on its native bird species. To combat this, the country has set an ambitious target of being predator free by 2050. However, the lack of sustained funding remains one of the biggest challenges in reaching this goal.
The Pest Free Token project was designed to help bridge this funding gap. Through the innovative use of cryptocurrency, the project raises ongoing funds for pest control, offering a solution that operates independently of government budgets and policies. It’s a sustainable way to ensure that the vital work of pest eradication continues for years to come.
100% of Profits Go to Pest Eradication
Unlike other cryptocurrency projects, Pest Free Token doesn’t just raise funds—it ensures that 100% of the profits from the sale of its $PFT cryptocurrency go directly to pest eradication initiatives. This commitment to transparency and accountability is enshrined in the project’s founding legal documents.
By supporting Pest Free Token, you’re contributing to a solution that not only protects New Zealand’s native birds but also ensures that the funds are being used for the cause they were intended. The project is driven by four core values: Transparency, Community, Integrity, and Service, and these values guide every decision the team makes.
How Pest Free Token Works
The Pest Free Token project has two main components: the PFT traps and the $PFT cryptocurrency.
PFT traps are strategically placed around New Zealand (see TrapMap here), and each one has a unique QR code. When a pest is caught in the trap, it can be registered on the Pest Free Token platform, and participants are rewarded with $PFT tokens. No other project incentivises pest eradication like us.
The $PFT cryptocurrency is New Zealand’s first crypto-for-charity initiative, as well as one of the most environmentally-friendly cryptocurrencies available. By purchasing and holding $PFT tokens, you directly contribute to pest eradication efforts. The process is simple and user-friendly, making it easy for anyone to get involved, whether you’re a seasoned crypto enthusiast or a newcomer to the space.
